Buy This Not That- Easy Household Swaps to Save Money

by Lori on June 28, 2012

All You Magazine has this article in their July edition. I learned some new tips and a few of these I have tried. How about you?

Save on shaving cream

Buy this: Hair conditioner

Not that: Shaving cream

Savings: about $4

Why? Shaving cream creates a layer between the razor and your skin while protecting from nicks and cuts. But conditioners work just as well, and they moisturize while you shave.

Save on shampoo

Buy this: Baby powder

Not that: Dry shampoo

Savings: about $8

Why? If you don’t have enough time to wash your locks, rub baby powder into your roots. Massage it in well, then brush it out. This trick also gives flat, greasy hair more oomph.

Save on body scrubs

Buy this: Epsom salts

Not that: Body scrub

Savings: about $10

Why? A bath with Epsom salts can help ease stress and tension, but did you know that these salts also can give you smooth, radiant skin? Simply mix a handful into your body wash (or a spoonful into your face wash). It sloughs off dead skin and revives your complexion instantly.

Save on hair products

Buy this: Hand lotion

Not that: Styling cream

Savings: about $7

Why? Work a dime-size squirt through your hair to cut down on frizz and moisturize dry ends.

Save on kitchen essentials

Buy This: Aluminum foil

Not That: Steel wool pads

Savings: about $1.50

Why: Roll a gently used piece of foil into a ball to remove baked-on bits of food from your glass pan. Squirt some dishwashing liquid into the pan and scrub with the foil.

Save while cooking

Buy This: Chicken broth

Not That: White wine

Savings: about $11 depending on the type of wine

Why? Do you  have a recipe that calls for a little white wine but you don’t want to buy a whole bottle? Substitute chicken broth; the results will be similar.

Cheap laundry detergent

Buy This: Shampoo

Not That: Delicate-fabric detergent

Savings: about $4

Why? Instead of spending money on special suds for your hand-washables, fill a sink with cold water and squeeze in a pea-size drop of shampoo. Clean delicates as usual. Then rinse and lay flat to dry.

Cheap silver polish

Buy this: Plain toothpaste

Not that: Silver polish

Savings: about $7

Why? Using regular (non-gel) white toothpaste can remove tarnish from silver. Squeeze a little paste onto a cloth and rub gently on moistened silver. Rinse the item and polish with a soft rag

Save on perfume

Buy this: Try a light fragrance body mist (like Bath & Body Works fragrance mists)

Not that: Actual perfume or Eau de Toilette

Savings: at least $18

Why? You can get similar sweet-smelling results when you use body spray instead of a pricey perfume.

Inexpensive weed killer

Buy this: Vinegar

Not that: Weed killer

Savings: about $11

Why? Go green and use vinegar instead of expensive (and toxic) chemicals. Pour vinegar into a large spray bottle made for gardening (about $5; at Home Depot) and squirt it on stubborn weeds. After a few hours in the sun, they should die.

Buy in bulk and save

Buy This: 32 oz. tub of yogurt

Not That: 6 oz. cup of yogurt

Savings: about $2

Why? Have several yogurt lovers in the house? Purchase large family-size containers―they end up being cheaper per ounce than individual ones.

Save on sweets treats

Buy this: Instant chocolate pudding

Not that: Prepared chocolate pudding cups

Savings: about $2

Why? You get more pudding for your buck this way. Follow the cooking instructions on the box, then scoop ½-cup spoonfuls into individual containers. You get six servings―and save $2.

Save loads on laundry

Buy this: Reusable dryer sheets

Not that: Regular Dryer Sheets

Savings: about $7

Why? Reusable sheets cost more up front, but you can use each one as many as 500 times, saving money in the long run. Plus they don’t contain chemicals, so are more eco-friendly.

Polish and clean for cheap

Buy this: Lemon Juice

Not that: Brass and copper cleaner

Savings: about $6-10

Why? Going green will save you money and give you peace of mind. Clean copper and solid brass the natural way: Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle some salt on it. Rub the lemon on the piece you’re polishing (don’t worry, the salt won’t scratch the metal). Rinse the item thoroughly and dry.

A magic fix for ailing skin

Buy this: Baking Soda

Not that: Facial Scrub

Savings: about $5-15

Why? There’s no need to spend money on expensive products. To relieve dry skin, make a paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Gently run on skin in a circular motion to exfoliate, removing dead skin cells. Rinse.

Cook up a more frugal fish

Buy This: Tilapia

Not That: Halibut

Savings: On average $13 (based on Tilapia average price $7/lb and Halibut average price $20/lb)

Why? Tilapia and halibut are both a mild white fish, but tilapia is on average 13 cheaper. It’s also thinner than halibut, so it cooks faster.

Forget the name brands

Buy this: Suave Advancement Therapy body lotion

Not: Pricier lotions

Savings: up to $18

Why? Suave Advanced Therapy may be cheap, but the vitamins and glycerin in the lotion relieve severely dry skin and restore moisture just as well as those in more expensive brands.

Save paper (towels)

Buy this: Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

Not that: Paper Towels

Savings: Over time several dollars. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (2 pack for about $3) and paper towels average $3/roll plus the cost of cleaners.

Why? The Magic Eraser is a multi-tasker― just add water and it lifts dirt, scuff marks and even paint splatters off almost any surface. Plus it can be used to clean more than one mess, unlike paper towels.

Pretty, cheap nails

Buy this: Wet ‘n’ Wild Shine clear nail protector

Not that: Pricey topcoats

Savings: as much as $8

Why? The brand of topcoat doesn’t matter as much as how often you apply it. Use every day to keep nails looking their best.
