With the holidays coming up it is nice to have a few things on hand for a last minute hostess gift.  I make a few of these DIY Hostess Gift Bags ahead for filling with wine, pretty oil and vinegar bottles, or other simple gifts.  They are quick and easy to make from just 2 supplies – a placemat and pretty ribbon.  You can pick up festive placemats or use something simple that could be used year round.

Fold your placemat in half with the side you want exposed facing in.

Using a sewing machine, sew the placemat together along one long side and one short side.  Leave the other short side open.  I also like to start a few inches down on the sewn long side, creating a small slit at the top of the finished bag.

Turn the bag so the finished side is out and carefully sew the ribbon to the outside of the bag, approximately 3”-4” from the top.

That’s it!  The ribbon will tie nicely around the top of a bottle or to tie the bag shut with many wonderful goodies inside.  This is also great to have tucked away for that birthday you forgot about (tell me I’m not the only one that does that), an unexpected guest, or the last minute holiday party!
