Change Out One Porchlight to Green and Warmly Welcome Home Our Veterans

A green light means go and that’s what veterans are known for. They possess the ability to take action quickly no matter the challenge. They have learned great leadership skills in any situation and represent the best of America. Their involvement in our communities is central to our nation’s prosperity.

These individuals have sacrificed their time and sometimes lives to preserve the safety and security of our homes. That being said, it is difficult for the rest of us to show them the appreciation they deserve. When they return home  out of uniform, they’re more camouflaged than ever. Greenlight A Vet is a campaign to establish visible national support for our veterans by replacing one of your normal publicly visible light bulbs with a green one.

There are 22.5 million veterans in the U.S., and more than 2.5 million Americans have served our country in uniform since 2001. In addition to finding jobs, many of these veterans need other types of transition support. That’s why Walmart is committed to greenlighting veterans in a couple different ways:

  • They have a goal to hire 250,000 veterans by 2020 through its Welcome Home Commitment.
  • They are actively supporting organizations focused on job training, education and community-based collaboration.

By October of 2016, Walmart has hired 100,000 veterans over the previous two years, and along with their Walmart Foundation, they recently committed $20 million to organizations focused specifically on transitioning veterans.

Many of my readers know that I’m a proud US Army veteran, married to a veteran.  Here is a photo of me with my dad and my grandfather.

How can you support a veteran?

Changing your porch light to green is one simple step. Take a photo and share it on social media with the hashtag #greenlightavet. Volunteering and hiring veterans can also make a huge difference. See how others are embracing the greenlighting movement here, and visit GreenlightAVet.com for more information.

If you feel compelled to do more than spend a few dollars on a green light bulb here are a few suggestions:

  • Hire a veteran today. Or help a veteran find a job.
  • Volunteer and serve with veterans groups in your local community.
  • Start a mentor/mentee relationship with a returning veteran.
  • Raise awareness on social media with the hashtag #greenlightavet.
  • Please still remember to signal support by changing your porch light to green!
