After Memorial Day, it is time to celebrate summer in SoCal! We are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places in the USA. Be sure and take some time out to hit the beach.
Here are a few ideas to keep you busy from The Orange County Register:
1. Learn to surf – have you tried this? Pick a place with small waves and try to go on an “off day”. The Register recommends the Corky Carroll Surf School and the Endless Sun Surf School in Newport Beach. Experts say that one of the best beaches for beginning surfers is Doheny State Beach.
2. Learn Paddleboarding -the Newport Aquatic Center offers both paddleboarding and kayaking rentals and instruction. Located in the Back Bay of Newport Beach, the calm waters are a popular spot for paddleboarding newbies. This is on my bucket list for this summer! Stay tuned for what I am sure will be some funny photos. The OC Register recommends Dana Point Harbor’s Baby Beach with board rentals available.
3. Do a Beach Cleanup – organizers provide trash bags, gloves, and educational material. This is a great family project if your kids are old enough. Find out more at surfrider.org.
4. Rent an Electric Duffy Boat and tour Newport Bay with up to 12 people. You can tie up your boat and dine at several restaurants or bring your own food and beverages.
:: A Few More from More with Less Today:
5. Board a boat to watch the Blue Whale migration during the spring and summer at Newport Landing.
6. Balboa Fun Zone – ride the waterfront Ferris Wheel, play arcade games, tour the nautical museum and enjoy a world famous Balboa Bar, (a chocolate dipped banana with toppings and worth every calorie.) This is also a popular place to rent bikes, take a harbor cruise, or catch a boat to Catalina Island. You can also reach the Balboa Fun Zone by the Balboa Ferry, mentioned in my top 3 favorites.
7. Catalina Island – 26 miles across the sea, Catalina Island is accessible by passenger ferries from Newport Beach and Dana Point. The trip takes approximately 1 hour. You can also take a helicopter from Long Beach or San Pedro. Activities include swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, or just enjoy strolling the quaint shops and galleries. You can ride the Catalina Express Ferry for free on your birthday but you must pre-register at www.catalinaexpress.com. Visit the CatalinaChamber.com website for more discounts and tours.
8. Sportfishing – Davey’s Locker, located in Newport Beach is a popular option for deep sea fishing trips, both full day and half-day as well as whale watching excursions and private boat charters.
9. Rent a beach cruiser bicycle and ride around Balboa Island and the boardwalk. There are several places to choose from at the Balboa Pier.
