My husband was in the Army when we first started “dating”, midway through a deployment to Iraq. I’d known him half my life but the 1000’s of miles between us seemed to bring us closer together. I remember many conversations with him focused on things he missed about home. Sometimes it was general things, like the smell of the earth after a hard rain. Other times it was more specific things like family traditions or favorite meals, always it was family. Here we are before he went back to Iraq after mid deployment leave.

Marie Callender’s is teaming up with the USO to support USO Operation Celebration, a program that shares a bit of home with our troops helping them to celebrate and bringing heartwarming feelings, flavors, and favorites of home to those who miss it most. Last year, with your support, they brought care packages to troops overseas through a
$250,000 donation. This year, Marie Callender’s Comforts From Home Project and USO Operation Celebration that brings celebrations large and small to our troops stationed here and abroad, from Valentine’s Day dances to Thanksgiving dinners.

To me there is such a big difference between a house and home. A house is shelter, a place to lay your head. Home is so much more than a place. Home is where our hearts and souls are happy, where we laugh and cry, where we share all that’s good and bad and hold each other close. Home is warm memories and traditions. Home is where family is.

Comforts from Home

Marie Callender’s wants you to take the Comforts from Home Photo Challenge on Facebook hosted by HGTV, the Travel Channel, and Food Network. What does home mean to you? Is it sharing a meal around the dinner table? Is it baking together in the kitchen or watching your favorite sports team on a Sunday afternoon?

Support the USO by submitting your photo, using #ComfortsFromHome. Scripps Network will donate $1 to the USO for each photo received (up to $10k) and every time you enter a code from specially-marked packages of Marie Callender’s meals or desserts, Marie Callender’s will make a donation to the USO to support USO Operation CelebrationTM.

This is one of my favorite photos of my husband with some of the kids. Being wrapped in his arms is home to the kids and having them in his arms is home to him.Comforts from Home
