Who Remembers Filene’s Basement? Were You a Filene’s Faithful? I Have Good News for You!

Expired post

Growing up in New England, a trip to Filene’s was a treasure hunt. If you are not familiar with them, they sold high-end goods with great markdowns. I think this is where my bargain hunting skills were developed as a young girl.

My dad was a school teacher and my mom was a very frugal stay at home money manager. I liked nice things. We had a wealthy family friend who would often give me her hand-me-downs and I came to appreciate fine fabrics and good workmanship from her cast-offs.

I could afford to buy one or two designer pieces that would have been unattainable elsewhere and I began to build a classic wardrobe of beautiful clothing. I remember when I started working as an intern at an advertising agency while in college, I was able to dress well on a broke person’s budget. After my internship, I was offered a full time position that I’m sure in some measure had to do with “looking the part.”

Filene’s Basement was opened in 1909 in the basement of Filene’s department store in Boston. Filene’s had over 20 stores in the Northeast, Chicago, and Mid-Atlantic States. You may remember the legendary annual event called the “Running of the Brides” a one day sale of deeply discounted wedding dresses. Propective brides and their moms, sisters and friends would camp out overnight and line up to snag wedding dresses worth thousands of dollars at drastic markdowns. When Filene’s Basement closed in 2011, I was very sad.
