Ingredients

  • 1 t. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 c. tomato sauce
  • 10 oz. Italian sausage , casings removed
  • 2 medium green bell peppers , thinly sliced
  • 2 medium red bell peppers , thinly sliced
  • 1 medium red onion , thinly sliced
  • 1 lb. pizza dough homemade or store-bought
  • 2 c. fresh mozzarella cheese , shredded
  • 1/2 c. Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 c. mayonnaise
  • 2 medium garlic cloves , minced
  • 1/2 c. fresh parsley , chopped
  • 1/2 lemon , juiced
  • Sea salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 450˚ degrees F.
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the savory sausage and cook. Break up the sausage with a wooden spoon and stir occasionally until the sausage is lightly browned. Do this for approximately 4-5 minutes.
  • In a large bowl, place the red and green pepper and the sliced red onions. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Cook by stirring occasionally or until the sweet bell peppers are soft and slightly brown. Do this for approximately 6-8 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Prepare a pizza pan or baking sheet. Line the sheet with parchment paper, if desired.
  • Roll the dough and transfer it to the prepared pizza pan.
  • Spoon the hearty tomato sauce over the store-bought or homemade dough. Add mozzarella cheese. Spoon the pepper and sausage mixture on top of the cheese.
  • Place the pizza in the oven and bake for 13-15 minutes or until the pizza crust is golden brown around the edges and the cheese melted.
  • While the pizza is baking, combine yogurt, mayonnaise, parsley, garlic, and fresh lemon juice in a small bowl. Whisk until combined.
  • Remove the pizza from the oven and slice it into 8 slices. Drizzle the pizza with the garlic sauce and serve immediately. Place it on an oven rack or pizza stone. Enjoy!

Notes

  1. If this is your first time making pizza and don't want to use store-bought ingredients for the pizza sauce, you can make your sauce using crushed tomatoes. This will give the homemade pizza more natural flavors.
