Kitchen Notes and Tips
- Yellow mustard is the traditional choice for Sloppy Joes and can be used as an alternative to Dijon mustard.
- To prevent flare-ups, ensure that no grease drips down the side of the skillet when cooking with gas heat.
- For easier cleanup, you can add all ingredients right in the skillet rather than using an extra bowl, or you can use one large bowl to whisk together the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and chili-garlic sauce to ensure they are thoroughly blended before adding to the skillet.
- If you have leftover meat, store it in freezer-safe containers to ensure it lasts for days.

#3. Return to medium-high heat and add the remaining ingredients: tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and chili garlic sauce. Season with additional salt and black pepper, if desired. Stir it thoroughly to combine. Simmer, uncovered, until heated through for approximately 5-10 minutes.
#4. While the sloppy joe meat simmers, place the top oven rack in the second from the highest position and preheat the oven broiler to high. Open the hamburger buns and arrange them on a large, rimmed baking sheet. Brush each surface with the melted butter and place the baking sheet under the broiler for several minutes, rotating once halfway through, or until the buns are golden brown.
