If you want to start a new blog, read our suggestions on choosing a domain name so you do it right from the start. I have 10 tips to share.

Choosing a domain name for your blog is similar to choosing a company name. Give it serious thought because the name is your identity on the web; it should not only fit your business but should be easy to find and promote.

Here are my suggestions steps below to help you pick the perfect domain name for your blog:

 1. Make it easy to type

The ease of typing your site into a browser is critical. If you use slang (u instead of you) or words with multiple spellings, it might be harder for customers to find your site.

2. Keep it short

If your domain name is long and complex, you risk customers mistyping or misspelling it.

3. Use keywords

Try using keywords that describe your business. For example, if you’re a guitar repair business, you may want to register or It helps improve your rank on search engines and just makes sense to your customers.

4. Target your area

If your business is local, consider including the name of your city or state in your domain name to make it easy for local customers to find you, for example,

5. Avoid numbers, hyphens and the ampersand sign

Numbers and hyphens are often misunderstood and the ampersand sign, &, often shows up garbled when used in social media. People who hear your website address don’t know if you’re using a numeral (6) or it’s spelled out (six). With hyphens, they may misplace or forget the dash.

6. Be memorable

There are millions of registered domain names, so having a domain that’s catchy and memorable is essential.

7. Research it

Make sure the name you’ve selected isn’t trademarked, copyrighted or being used by soemone else. Do your research ahead of time.

8. Use an appropriate extension

If you are going to use less common extensions, be sure to choose one that works for your business. The .com domain extension is the most popular, but can be tough to get and/or expensive because it’s been around for so long.

Here are some top extensions:

  • .co : an abbreviation for company.
  • .info : informational.
  • .net : technical, infrastructure sites.
  • .org : non-commercial organizations.
  • .biz : business, commercial.
  • .me : blogs or personal.

Pro tip: You don’t need to build a website for every domain. You can purchase the variations and then forward those to your primary website.

9. Protect your brand

To protect your brand, you can purchase various domain extensions and misspelled versions of your domain name. This will prevent others from registering versions your website which can add confusion or divert your traffic.

10. Act fast

Domain names sell quickly. Thankfully, they’re also inexpensive, so register your favorite domain names as soon as possible. If you’re having trouble finding an available name, domain registrars like GoDaddy will suggest alternate names during your domain search to help you find the perfect domain name.

I have used GoDaddy for my domain names since I began in 2009 and I recommend them. Their customer service is top notch if you have questions.

You can use their search bar to do some research before you decide. They often run promotions, here is a current one you can try:
