Where To Sell Used Clothes Online

Poshmark

Poshmark is one of my go-to platforms when I’m planning and looking to buy and sell used clothing. It has a user-friendly interface and social media-like features, it’s perfect for those who love to engage with a community of fellow fashion lovers!

Check out this post I made to get more insights: Poshmark Basics: Your Guide to Buying & Selling Like a Pro!

Fees: Poshmark takes a flat fee of $2.95 for sales under $15, and 20% for sales of $15 or more. Check out the details here.

Mercari

Mercari is another excellent platform for selling used clothes. It caters to a wide range of items, from everyday wear to luxury brands. You can also sell almost anything here, making it a versatile option for decluttering your home.

Fees: Mercari no longer charges a flat 10% commission for every sale on its platform, as of March 27, 2024. It will now add a service fee for each purchase made by shoppers and is displayed at checkout. Get more insights here.

eBay

eBay is a well-known marketplace where you can sell virtually anything, including used clothes. It’s ideal for reaching a global audience and selling unique, vintage, or collectible clothing items.

Fees: eBay includes an insertion fee and a final value fee for most clothing items.

Depop

Depop is a favorite among younger sellers and buyers, particularly for vintage and streetwear styles. It features an Instagram-like interface and in-app messaging for easy communication with buyers.

Fees: Depop charges a 10% seller fee on the total transaction amount. Check the full details here.

Vinted

Vinted is a great platform for selling used clothes. While it’s more popular in Europe, it’s starting to gain popularity in the US. It’s known for its user-friendly interface and buyer protection features.

Fees: Vinted allows you to list items for free and only charges a fee when you make a sale. Buyers do pay for their service protection fee. Get more details here.

The RealReal

If you have high-end, designer items, The RealReal is a good platform for selling them. It specializes in luxury consignment and has a team of experts that authenticate items.

Fees: Commission rates vary based on the item’s value and your sales history, typically ranging from 30% to 75% for the seller. Read the full information on fees and commissions here.

Vestiaire Collective

Vestiaire Collective is a French fashion resale website that acquired Tradesy in 2022. This merger has consolidated two major players in the luxury resale market.

What Happened to Tradesy?

Tradesy was fully integrated into Vestiaire Collective by early 2023. The Tradesy website and app were shut down and all users were redirected to Vestiaire Collective. This merger has created a stronger platform with a wider selection of buyers and a larger audience for sellers.

Fees: Vestiaire Collective charges different fees depending on the seller’s location. Their commission structure varies and typically depends on the item’s value. Check the full details here.

thredUP

thredUP offers a unique “clean out kit” service where you can send in your clothes and they handle the rest. You can order a Clean Out Bag and fill it with Women’s, Junior’s, and Kid’s Clothing and mail it in for FREE. thredUP will analyze your items and will give you a percentage of the resale value.

Fees: thredUP’s payout structure varies, but you can expect to receive up to 80% of the selling price, depending on the item’s value. You can read more about it here.

Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a convenient option for selling used clothes locally. It’s ideal for those who prefer local, in-person transactions. It’s free to use and allows you to buy and sell in your local community. Based on my experience, the platform is perfect for quick sales and avoiding shipping hassles.

Fees: Facebook doesn’t charge any fees for listings or sales in their Marketplace.

Pro tip: When selling on Facebook Marketplace, agree to meet in a safe area. If you want the buyer to come to your home, do not give out your address until they text that they are nearby. You can give major cross streets or a local landmark. In my experience, there will be no-shows and scammers.

Another option – here are popular stores that want your old clothes.

Expert Tips for Choosing Which Used Clothes to Sell

Assess Item Condition

Only sell items in good to excellent condition. Clothes with stains, holes, or excessive wear are less likely to sell.

Consider the Brand

Popular brands and designer labels typically sell faster and better. Consider listing items from popular brands that are in demand.

Sell In-Season Items

List items appropriate for the upcoming season to maximize interest. If you have items from your closet that are Winter or Fall items, they won’t sell now (in the Summer) and most stores won’t even buy them. Put those items away until we get to August then you can pull them out and sell them to get top dollar.

Identify Trends

Stay updated on current fashion trends because some brands and styles have cult followings. Prioritize listing items that align with them because they are more likely to attract buyers.

Highlight Unique Pieces

Vintage, rare, limited edition, collectible, or one-of-a-kind items often get higher prices and attract collectors.

Quick and Easy Strategies to Maximize Your Sales

Take Great Photos

Use natural light and multiple angles to showcase your items accurately.

Write Detailed Descriptions

Include measurements, fabric, and exact details. You should also mention any flaws for transparency.

Price Competitively

Research similar items to price your pieces strategically. Look on your chosen platform to see what others are charging.

Offer Bundle Deals

You can encourage multiple purchases by offering discounts on bundles. An example could be, any 3 items for $50, or take $10 off on the 3rd item to incentivize the buyer to buy multiple items.

Respond Promptly

Quick and friendly communication can often result in more sales and positive reviews.

Package with Care

Proper packaging shows professionalism and can also lead to repeat customers.

Promote Your Listings

Share your listings on your social media accounts or related groups to reach a wider audience.

Selling used clothes online can be profitable and it’s also a sustainable way to manage your wardrobe and waste. By choosing the right platform and following these tips, you can maximize your extra earnings and enjoy a clutter-free closet. Happy selling!
