What are Plantains?

Plantains are part of the banana family and are grown in tropical regions worldwide. The first time I tried plantains was in Puerto Rico. Plantains look like larger bananas and are green to yellow when not ripe and black when fully ripe.

Plantains can be hard to peel, so you may have to cut off the skin with a knife. They cannot be eaten raw like bananas; they need to be cooked. Peeled plantains can be fried, baked, boiled, steamed, or grilled.

Fried plantains taste like crispy slices of bananas. They are delicious with either brown sugar or salt. It’s a well-known traditional Jamaican snack. If it’s your first time making this recipe, you will find that it’s quite easy to follow and make.

The sweetness of the ripe plantains helps balance the savory beef patty pies.

  • A Jamaican patty is traditionally made with beef, but you can also use other fillings like chicken, vegetables, or seafood.
  • While beef is traditional, they are also available filled with chicken, seafood, lamb, vegetables, and several other fillings.
