What’s the Difference between Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack?

Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack offer a unique shopping experience but are under the same brand: Nordstrom.

Nordstrom department stores showcase new arrivals of high-end and well-known brands, particularly in designer clothing, accessories, and beauty products. You’ll also find one of their best-selling perks, their styling services. It also offers curbside pickup, while Nordstrom Rack does not.

Nordstrom Rack features discounts of up to 70% for off-price retailers. It’s also where you can spot the best deals on a wide range of products from top brands from previous seasons. It’s a part of Nordstrom where all the discount items end up. A stark difference between both stores that you’ll notice is the lack of amenities and services (alterations, tailoring, restaurants, coffee bars, and bra fittings) at Nordstrom Rack stores. There are 346 stores present in 41 states. They hold regular Clear the Rack sales, whereas Nordstrom only has two significant sales per year: the Nordstrom Black Friday Sale and the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

If you are patient and willing to do a little digging, eventually, all the discounted, unsold items from Nordstrom department stores end up at Nordstrom Rack, where you can find discounts of up to 70% and items that are mostly still in good condition. You’ll often find killer deals from famous designer brands like Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Steve Madden, and more!

However, if the tag says “Nordstrom Rack,” then that item is not from a full-price Nordstrom store; it was explicitly made for Nordstrom Rack. There are approximately three times as many Nordstrom Rack stores as there are Nordstrom department stores, so it’s understandable that there wouldn’t be enough merchandise from Nordstrom to stock the Nordstrom Rack stores.

Easy Shopping Experience

The good news is their online store is easy to shop so you can score deals on your phone or laptop. I like to find possibilities and add them to my cart but just know, they may not stay in your cart for long, so be sure to check a Nordstrom Rack Location near you!

Watch Out for Sale Events

Be sure to mark your calendar for the Nordstrom Rack Black Friday Sale and keep an eye out for their Clear the Rack sales, which typically occur once a month. You’ll surely get a great deal at these sale events!

In addition to offering deep discounts on clothing, shoes, and accessories, it’s also a great place to shop for fragrances and makeup from renowned brands such as MAC, Stila, and Urban Decay. Hair products, such as shampoo, conditioner, leave-in products, and hairspray, can yield savings.

Check Altered or Refinished Items

Explore the altered or refinished designer items available at Nordstrom. This can easily be spotted as items in this category have a standard white Nordstrom Rack price tag. The best way to get a great deal in this category is to ensure they’re in good condition!

Join the Nordy Club

Nordstrom’s loyalty program is called the Nordy Club, and its perks are also available to Nordstrom Rack shoppers. Join and earn one point for every dollar you spend, and two points for every dollar spent using a Nordstrom credit or debit card. Accumulate 10,000 points and you’ll get a $10 “Note” (aka a gift card), while 20,000 points will get you $20 to spend at the retailer. It’s free to join and can be used on both online and in-store purchases. Nordy Club Members also get early notice and exclusive access to Clear the Rack sales.
