I stopped in my local thrift store and picked up three containers to use in my craft. Two of them were medium-sized with an attached base plus a teacup. I would have preferred a teacup with a saucer but did not see any I liked. I recommend choosing your containers first and then matching the size of the herbs to the containers.
I went to Home Depot for my herbs and spent $6.98 for Rosemary, Mint, and Basil. If you have the time, you can grow your herbs from seed inside the containers. Be sure to keep the soil moist with a spray bottle and you should see growth in a few weeks.
I spent $14 at the thrift store for the three containers. You can do better, but I wanted to get the project done right away. I could have gone on a senior day for a discount, or to a garage sale or cheaper thrift store if I allowed myself more time. It is still a very frugal gift. I also bought a small bag of planter mix recently at Walmart, for $7 and I ordered the bamboo plant labels on Amazon for under $8 for a pack of 30.
How to Make a DIY Herb Garden Gift
Step #1. Add a small amount of planting mix to the bottom of your containers.
Tip: Save the plant marker that typically comes with the herbs so you can note the light requirements as they are different for different types of herbs. You may want to wash the plant marker and slip it inside the gift so the recipient will also know the correct light needed to care for the herbs.
Step #2. The project is a bit messy. You might not want to assemble it on your kitchen counter!

Step #3. These plant markers are eco-friendly (bamboo) and are large enough to write on. The marker to write on them is included too. They come 30 in a pack so they are great to share!
Tip: You can also make plant markers from popsicle sticks. If your kids are old enough you can have them write on the plant markers.
Step #4. If you are using teacups, you can carefully separate a big bunch of basil and use a small amount to put in the teacup. This is a good herb to choose if you are making multiple gifts because you can get many small bunches from one medium-sized basil plant.
Tip: Basil and Mint are best planted in containers. I learned that last year when they took over my small garden.
Tip: I had a bag of moss and some tiny white pebbles that I used to cover the dirt once I was finished but this is optional.
Step #5. Covering the dirt with small pebbles or moss is a nice finishing touch.
Step #6. Mist the herbs daily because there is no drainage in the containers. Keep them in a sunny spot if the instructions on the plant tag call for sun. Once they start to falter, you can just re-pot them in a small pot with drainage or you can freeze the herbs to use later.

For My Thrift Store Shoppers
Those price stickers can be difficult to remove! I put a little Goo Gone and rubbed the sticker with a cotton swab dipped in the Goo Gone. Get it nice and wet and let it sit for a few minutes. Then take a spoon or flat edge and you can scrape off those stubborn price tags much easier with no residue.
You can find Goo Gone on Amazon. It will last a long time!
